Frank Ocean’s letter to himself before the fame (2011)
Back in 2011, Frank Ocean wrote a letter to his younger self on Tumblr after a fan asked what he would tell himself from five years earlier. Writing to himself as “Chris” Frank looked back on the years before fame, talking about working regular jobs, dealing with heartbreak, sleeping on couches, and trying to make it in music without knowing if any of it would ever pay off.
Throughout the letter, he reassures his younger self that all the struggle, patience, and uncertainty would eventually be worth it. He tells himself to stay strong, be patient, and keep believing, even when it feels like nothing is changing.
What makes the letter so interesting is when it was written. At the time, Frank had just released Nostalgia, Ultra and was finally starting to get recognition. Near the end, he mentions that he’s about to get on a flight to work with Kanye West and Jay-Z on Watch the Throne, which would eventually lead to him being featured on “Made in America” and contributing vocals to “No Church in the Wild,” showing just how fast his life was moving at that moment.
Just one year later, Frank would release Channel Orange, which debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200, won him his first Grammy Award, and established him as one of the most respected artists of his generation. Four years after that, he released Blonde, an album that many fans and critics consider one of the greatest albums of all time.
This letter is a reminder that success rarely happens overnight. Before the accolades and success, Frank was just another young guy chasing a dream and hoping things would work out. To anyone that’s reading this, if you’re struggling right now and it feels like your dream is hitting a dead wall, trust the process, keep putting in the work, and don’t give up on your dreams. Believe in yourself and know that you have the power to make it. The life you want might be closer than you think, even if you can’t see it yet.
