As Prince Archie celebrates his 7th birthday, Prince Harry is doubling down on a very different kind of parenting — one deeply shaped by his own turbulent royal childhood.

According to a close source speaking to PEOPLE, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are being very intentional with Prince Archie (now 7) and Princess Lilibet (4).
“They give their kids space to be themselves — for their different personalities to flourish. After growing up so publicly, that was really important to Harry.”
Harry, who was raised under intense scrutiny as the younger son of then-Prince Charles and Princess Diana, has openly said this experience continues to influence how he raises his own children.
During the couple’s trip to Australia in April, Harry spoke candidly at a Movember event:
“I see parenting evolving over time. Our kids are our upgrade. Not to say that I upgraded my dad or that my kids upgraded me, but the kids that we bring up in today’s world need to be upgraded.”
He added:
“There’s no judgement, there’s no blame. However you are parenting… you are going to want to improve on that.”
Harry also credited therapy with helping him become the father he wants to be:
“Certainly from a therapy standpoint, you want to be the best version of yourself for your kids. I knew that I had stuff from the past that I needed to deal with.”
Now living privately in Montecito, California, after stepping back from royal duties in 2020, insiders say the family is thriving.
“They love their home and their community. The kids are really thriving.”
